Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script

Before anyone calls “action” on a short drama set, someone has already chosen which story is worth the risk. If you trace a few hits backward, you often discover a book at the start of the process. Breaking the Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance built www.reelshorts.org/where-to-watch/my-hot-firefighter-ex-boyfriend around a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, the mafia arranged-marriage series ReelShort premiered on November 1, 2025, is based on a novel by Cora Reilly. The Korean office romance Quiet in the Office!, released in 2026 and given a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. Source material sits close at hand since several app owners also operate reading businesses: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Writers fall back on tested tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama where no book exists. The script has one job: to compress a long drama story into scenes that each land a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Familiar Faces

The casting stage is the point where the format’s economics show up on screen. Browsing the cast lists for short series on IMDb, you see the same names turning up again and again. ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha was headlined by Noah Fearnley in 2024 and he returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman led both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, appearing opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. A lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. Studios are also casting with a specific viewer in mind, since TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women. A production team in Los Angeles works for DramaBox.

Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

Per TheWrap, a Western short drama is usually filmed in eight to ten days and costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series. The picture is similar in Wikipedia’s overview of the format, where a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes is placed at $150,000 to $250,000. A 70-episode series shot in eight days translates into close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling overseas have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture pegged a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Jiuzhou also reported about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, so the costly shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, the footage is chopped into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. With room for a turn or two of plot at that length, each episode is built around a question the next episode pledges to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. A 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time once those slivers are stacked together. On GoodShort’s official pages, My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen is listed with 30 episodes and The Dragon King’s Return is listed with 100 episodes; episode counts differ widely by title. Because ReelShort also operates official channels on TikTok, YouTube and Dailymotion, the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. In other words, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative decision is also a commercial one. TheWrap outlines a standard model in which the first eight to ten episodes are free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Once the free run ends, coins unlock the episodes, at a standard cost of about 60 coins per episode according to ReelShort’s blog. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; otherwise, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically. Since prices differ by platform, country and promotion, your store may display something different. Paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger rank among the most common complaints about these apps, alongside auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, which is why placement is the controversial part. Any coin generator or modded “unlimited coins” app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series

The newest stage of production removes the camera entirely. Animated motion comics now sit alongside ReelShort’s live-action library. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory while saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic that lists no cast; it centers on heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. It should not be mixed up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series of the same name. DramaWave has gone furthest: according to 36Kr, more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated, and the same outlet also reported that the app’s annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely dismissed it as “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line

Established studios have noticed; Fox Entertainment is the clearest example. Fox turned into a shareholder in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, through an equity stake in October 2025. Fox also made a commitment to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already streaming on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service, and Holywater secured a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital. That a network-scale producer is committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has moved from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line Summed Up

The logic of the business snaps into focus once the stages are set side by side. The fixed, expensive block is the shoot, and much of the rest is organized around it. Scripts tend to come in pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, known faces carry the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to sum up typical time and cost at each stage. Rather than guessing, it says so where no reliable number has been published.
